Business Process Integration (BPI) is the synchronization of a company’s internal operations with those of its other divisions and its trading partners by connecting disparate systems in real-time. The software ‘glue’ required to communicate between incompatible systems has been known by different names from Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to Message-oriented Middleware (MoM) to Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) and now the latest incarnation: Business Process Integration.
At Apex, we believe and trust that the most important distinction between the best BPI systems out there are BPI tools that are graphical and code-free in nature such that business analysts, process owners or even power users can grasp how to use the software. We believe that in the past only professional developers could use a Software Development Kit (SDK) and then understand the complexity of juggling multiple protocols and converting between different document and file formats.
We also believe that BPI tools must take a top-down, process-centric approach rather than a bottom-up, code-centric approach. Since steps /nodes in any given process are made from reusable parts, we believe that such new processes should be designed using the building blocks from past creations. This helps in situations when the business rules governing a particular process are changed, or if the processing sequence (workflows) needs to be re-orchestrated or expanded upon. This inadvertently makes that impact easy to identify and the modifications are effected quickly and without mega disruption. Good BPI tools make differences that are sometimes less apparent to the naked eye so modern BPI tools should make greater use of open standards and lower cost connections rather than the proprietary networks and adaptors of the past situations.
Benefits of BPI range from Strategic Formulation, (Identify and quantify the benefits of process integration by providing decision support to structure the supply chain agenda), Operations Improvements: (Enhance customer service & agility and reduce costs by introducing relevant supply chain best practices), People Alignment: (Empowering people to operate in an integrated business environment and aligned measurements) to Technology Integration: (Leveraging existing or new systems investments to support process measurement and integration.)
Apex in a nutshell believes that the main advantage of process integration is to consider a system as a whole (i.e. integrated or holistic approach) in order to improve their design and/or operation and organisations that have integrated approach to their process will always have a competitive advantage over their competitors.
